The Verdict

A physical timer on your desk is more effective than a phone timer because it's always visible and doesn't tempt you to check notifications. The Time Timer's visual disk makes remaining time intuitive at a glance.

Full Review

I used phone timers for Pomodoro sessions for years. They worked, technically. But every time I picked up my phone to start a timer, I had to actively resist checking messages. The Time Timer eliminated that problem entirely.

The visual disk — a red section that shrinks as time passes — is the key feature. You can see at a glance how much time remains without reading a number. That peripheral awareness of time passing is surprisingly motivating during a writing session.

The silent operation mode is essential for me. The ticking of a traditional timer is distracting; the Time Timer can run completely silently, with just the visual indicator. The alert at the end is audible but not jarring.

At $35, it's more than a kitchen timer but less than most productivity gadgets. If you use time-boxing as part of your writing practice — and you should — it's a worthwhile upgrade from your phone.
