Blackwing 602 Pencils

The pencil Steinbeck used. Still the best.

The Verdict

The Blackwing 602 is the pencil that converted me from pens for first-draft work. Firm, smooth, and precise — it writes like a pencil should, and the flat eraser is genuinely useful.

Full Review

I came to the Blackwing 602 skeptically. A premium pencil felt like an affectation — the kind of thing writers buy to feel like writers rather than to actually write. I was wrong. After one notebook of first-draft work with these, I understood why Steinbeck and John Muir kept them in rotation.

The 602 uses a firm graphite formulation — firmer than the softer Blackwing Pearl or the balanced Natural. That firmness translates to a precise, controlled line that holds up well on most notebook paper without smearing. For longhand drafting, margin notes, and outlining, it's exactly what you want.

The flat eraser is the detail that separates Blackwings from every other pencil I've used. It's replaceable, it's large enough to actually grip, and it erases cleanly without tearing the page. It sounds like a small thing until you've spent years fighting with the tiny pink nub on a standard pencil.

At $26 for a box of twelve, these are a genuine luxury compared to a pack of Ticonderogas. But if you write longhand regularly — first drafts, journaling, outlining — the experience is noticeably better. Some tools earn their price. The Blackwing 602 is one of them.
